Dolphins Beat Mosley in First Round to Advance

The Gulf Breeze softball team was one of three GBHS teams competing in post-season competition last week and the only squad to advance. Baseball saw their season end when they were eliminated in the district semi-finals by Fort Walton Beach and boys lacrosse lost to Oak Hall in the second round of the state tournament. The softball team came into the opening round with much expectation. Hosting (Panama City) Mosley- a traditional power in both baseball and softball- Gulf Breeze did not disappoint. Mosley struck first, scoring the game's first run in the top of the first, but they would not string very many hits together in the remaining frames. Elle Branton pitched a gem- a complete game- to lead the Dolphins to the 4-2 win. She also helped her own cause at the plate, driving in two on a single in the bottom of the second inning to put her squad ahead. It was a lead that she would not relinquish, battling back after giving up a second run in the top of the sixth. Gulf Breeze advances to the Region 1 quarterfinals and will host West Florida in a rematch of the district championship game Tuesday May 8th and 6:00 PM.
