Weightlifting is a laborious sport that requires intensity and strength. In weightlifting, you are divided into weight class, which means you are put into groups depending on how much you weigh, and how much you are able to lift. There are two types of lifts, the bench press and the clean and jerk. A lifter is only allowed up to three lifts on each of these. The bench press is performed with the lifter on his/her back on a bench with a flat surface. Once the bar is placed motionless above the lifter’s chest, they must straighten their arms vertically on the verbal command “Press” of the referee. This position must also be held motionless until the referee call “Rack”. The amount of points you receive depends on the official value of the lift.

Our Gulf Breeze High girls weightlifting team has had a great season so far! These girls show how committed they are by showing up to 6:45 AM practices three times a week. They have meets one to two times a month and they left for invitationals at 7:00 AM on Jan. 14, then they go to districts on Jan. 24. Two girls from each weight class get to go to districts, then from there whoever places in the top six in each weight class gets to go to regionals and state.
